At Discovery, our Kid Town program introduces our church's youngest attendees to the love of Jesus and a knowledge of God's Word. However, we believe it is vitally important to continue our children's Christian education as they enter their preteen and early teen years. At this age, peers become an ever-increasing influence and teenagers need opportunities to discuss their faith with others their age. So we aim to help our young teens stay connected to their faith and develop into strong Christian men and women by teaching them God's Truth and helping them see the practical applications for their lives alongside one another.
Every Sunday, Discovery has a Junior High Sunday School class for students in the 6th-9th grades. This Fall, we are spending 13 weeks discussing our basic Christian beliefs including discussions of faith, sin, forgiveness, prayer, missions, and being members of a church. Students spend time reading scripture for themselves as well as discussing the realities of living as Christians in a broken world.
We hope your teenager will be there! Students stay in the service for the first few worship songs then come over to the side door that leads to the classrooms. A teacher will be there to meet them, and we will spend the remainder of the service in our class. If your child has a Bible, it would be great if they could bring it, otherwise a Bible will be provided.
Alison Simes is the Junior High Team Leader as well as a teacher for the class. Alison spends her weekdays teaching in the South Sacramento public school system, so she realizes the challenges our kids are facing at school each day! In addition, as a parent of two older teenagers, she knows the challenges they are facing at home. (Not to mention the challenges you face as a parent!) Alison loves teaching this age group and remains excited by the opportunity to assist our teenagers as they discover Christ in the midst of a challenging world. Although Discovery currently does not have a Senior High Youth program, we seek to engage our older teenagers in one-on-one relationships with young adults that can mentor them in a life with Christ. For more information. Email info@discoverychristianchurch.org.
